David Dilley Bannon (born David Wayne Dilley; April 22, 1963) is an American author, lecturer, curator and translator,[1] best known for the books Elements of Subtitles[2] and Wounded in Spirit.[3] He publishes on grief, art, history, culture, and translation, as well as delivering lectures at libraries, museums and conferences. Having left home at age 19, Bannon spent many years in Asia. Bannon taught college for two decades and was the curator of Asian art for the Florence Museum of Art and History in South Carolina. He has also had numerous TV appearances and interviews.
Early life and education
[edit]Bannon was born in Tacoma, Washington, and grew up in Spokane Valley, Washington. The son of photographer Dennis Dilley, he left home at age 19, spending many years in Asia.
Career

Bannon taught college for two decades and for two years (from 1992-1994)[4] was the curator of Asian art for the then Florence Museum of Art and History in South Carolina, USA.[5]
Bannon writes and speaks[6] on art,[7] history,[8] culture,[9] computer technology,[10] business[11] and translation.[12][13][14][15][16] He has appeared on A&E,[17] The Discovery Channel[18] and The History Channel[19] and in The Wall Street Journal.[20]Bannon has appeared on The Discovery Channel (1997), Ancient Mysteries (1997), In Search of History (1999), On the Inside (2001), TechTV (2003) and History's Mysteries (2006). He has been interviewed by NPR, Fox News and The Wall Street Journal.[21]
He has also written in Korean. His original Korean-language poems[22] and translations of Korean poetry and spirituality texts have appeared in consumer magazines,[23] trade publications[24][25] and academic journals.[26] Bannon has also published two collections of the writings of Korean Zen master Bopjong.[27][28]
Translation work
[edit]Bannon translates from Korean-to-English and from German-to-English.
Korean
[edit]Bannon translated Korean-to-English subtitles for YA Entertainment and the Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation.[29]
He has translated subtitles for 44 South Korean television shows, including East of Eden (2008), The Great Queen Seondeok (2009), Dong Yi (2010), The Greatest Love (2011), Soldier (2012), Lights and Shadows (2011), Nine-tailed Fox (2013) and Mystery Television (2019).[30]
German

Personal life

Married twice, he had one child, Jessica Autumn Bannon. She died in 2015 of a fentanyl-laced heroin overdose.[32][33][34] After his daughter's death, Bannon and his wife established the Jessica Autumn Bannon Memorial Film Collection. The bulk of the collection is housed in the Chester County Library in Chester, South Carolina.[35]
Bannon was arrested in Boulder, Colorado, on January 27, 2006, on the charges of criminal impersonation, computer crime, and attempted theft. The charges leveled against him asserted that he created a fraudulent personal history. Bannon pleaded guilty[36] and was sentenced to five years. He serve three years before being released in June 2009.
